Short Film: Midnight Death

This is a short 11-minute film directed by Deanna Meske and is the sequel to the short film Midnight Thirst.

The first thing I noticed about this was that the photography seemed that bit more polished, the film looking to have a bit more budget perhaps. It warps towards the end into a much wider vista than the narrow family view of the first film (and the majority of this).

However, we start with a scene that looks like a little girl, Rachel (Rachel Ryals), playing with an older girl, Teagan (Katie Monds), as mom Jocelin (Deanna Meske) sits on the couch opposite. Only as the camera moves do we realise that Rachel is feeding from Teagan’s wrist and the older girl is obviously distressed. Rachel asks to be able to go for bath and play with her dolls. As she leaves Jocelin gets a call from her mother – she’s planning on visiting Rachel’s grandparents and they discuss Rachel’s new plaything. During the call Jocelin realises Teagan has gone.

Ringing off from her mom she searches the house for Teagan, a search impeded by the lights going out (there is a comment about breakers but this seemed all too much a contrivance; she tried the lights in just about every room – seemingly annoyed each time – and suddenly they were on in the lounge when she returned there). She eventually picks up a taser for good measure, but Teagan is proving more resourceful than she would have thought.
